The Burial Mound of the Unbeaten is the 1961 work of one of the former Yugoslavia’s most brilliant architects, Bogdan Bogdanović, who specialized in mixing up the historical with the antic and celestial. Make sure to also visit Matka’s underwater caverns – they’ve been explored to a depth of 212m (700ft) and the bottom has still not been found, making these caves among the deepest in Europe. Standing on a plateau at the very top of Čaršija, Mustafa Pasha Mosque, dating back to 1492, is where you can see locals come and go for prayers and sit down for chitchat in the lovely rose garden. A further five-minute walk north will bring you to the partially submerged Sveti Spas Church, Skopje’s most important historical building. Heading northwest of the lake is mountainside Vevčani, a 9th-century quiet rural settlement beloved by locals for its traditional restaurants and natural springs.

Ohrid is North Macedonia’s prime destination, with its atmospheric old quarter with beautiful churches along a graceful hill, topped by a medieval castle overlooking serene, 34km-long Lake Ohrid. Skopje is among Europe’s most entertaining and eclectic small capital cities. In high-season, they may be sold out, so it is best to go over to the bus station the day before to get your ticket.

So, if you’re keen to explore for yourself, here are some of the best things to do in Skopje, from statuesque sightseeing and pirate ship hotels to museums and markets spanning (what looks like, at least) centuries of history. There’s also fake old timey ships docked on the river, red double decker buses zooming around town, and statues. Kitschy, puzzling and shamelessly grand, the North Macedonian capital of Skopje (AKA Balkan Las Vegas) is a destination that truly divides people.

Kratovo

The bedisten, from the 15th to the 19th centuries, was rebuilt, and many stores, often changing over time, were located there. The icons and frescoes were created thanks to voluntary contributions of local businessmen and citizens. Legend says that the Ottoman authorities collected around 60,000 eggs from nearby villages and mixed them in the mortar to make the walls stronger. The city has many historical building dating from many historical periods.

Prilep

Pelister National Park is located in the Baba Mountain range in southwestern North Macedonia. These remnants illustrate the city’s rich architectural and cultural heritage. Visitors can explore a variety of structures, including a Roman theatre, several lavish villas with intricate mosaics, public baths, and a number of early Christian basilicas. Today, Stobi is one of the most prominent archaeological sites in North Macedonia, offering a window into the past with its well-preserved ruins. Stobi is an ancient city of significant historical and archaeological importance. It hosts the South East European University, which contributes to the city’s youthful and dynamic atmosphere.

If you want to visit a bit more distant places like Saint Naum Monastery you can take the local bus or boat there. Or you can take the bus to Pogradec and walk/take the taxi to the border, walk through the border and then catch the bus/taxi from Saint Naum Monastery to Ohrid. In the summertime, it’s better to buy the ticket a few days in advance as the buses can get full. Otherwise, you can take the bus from Skopje, there are at least ten connections per day and the journey takes a bit over 3 hours. The local Ohrid airport serves flights to only a few European destinations, especially in the summertime but it’s worth checking if there are direct connections from your local airport. Even if Ohrid is one of the largest cities in Macedonia it doesn’t feel that way.

Matka Canyon

The bus leaves half-hourly or hourly, depending on passengers, and stops at several places including the bus/train station and central square An airport shuttle bus, Vardar Express, runs between the airport and the city. Today you can visit his memorial home and his grave in Krusevo, there are also numerous signs all over the town commemorating this famous artist. Krusevo was also the hometown of the most popular Macedonian singer, Tose Proeski who died in a car accident in 2007 at the age of 26. With an elevation of 1,350 m Krusevo is the highest-located town in the country that, in 1903, was the center of the Ilinden Uprising against the Ottoman Empire. This is one of the best places to visit in Prilep, not only for its historical value but also stunning views around.

Where to stay in Skopje:

A car is also the ideal solution for getting around the city; even though https://losinterventores.com/ public buses are available, they’re not that great. It’s an important historical town that boasts well-preserved Ottoman-style architecture and a few notable landmarks and has a very distinct coffee-drinking culture. But you’ll definitely need your car on day 5 when you drive along the coast to the Bay of Bones and St. Naum.

Museum of the City of Skopje

Today, this archaeological site offers one of the most comprehensive glimpses into urban life during late antiquity in the Balkans. Galleries and studios occupy restored medieval buildings, creating an organic blend of historical architecture and contemporary creativity. The stone bridges, gracefully arching over the Kratovska River, connect different quarters of the town while serving as gathering places for locals sharing stories and gossip. This small town, built in an extinct volcanic crater, captivates visitors with its unique architecture, mysterious towers, and legendary bridges. Day 4-5: Explore Ohrid

Peak tourist season brings vibrant festivals but also crowds at popular sites. Orthodox Easter celebrations provide unique cultural experiences. The canyon’s proximity to Skopje makes it ideal for day trips, though overnight stays in nearby villages provide deeper immersion in nature. The annual Ilinden celebrations in August attract visitors nationwide for cultural performances, traditional sports, and revolutionary reenactments.

At present (2018), you cannot buy a bus ticket online; you can only buy it at the bus station. Within Skopje, the easiest is to get around by taxi but for a longer stay, you should get a bus card and a map of the bus lines.

Although there are public buses in Skopje, they are not too reliable, so driving is definitely the more convenient option. Most of the attractions recommended in the itinerary are located in and around the city center, so you can reach most places by walking. My favorite thing to do in Skopje is to explore the Old Bazaar, which has its unique architecture and countless lovely shops and eateries.

Strumica is ideal for travelers looking to explore local life without heavy tourist crowds. If you’re into local culture and offbeat festivals, it’s one of the most unique experiences in the country. The town has several historic churches, small museums, and beach spots that are less crowded than nearby tourist hubs. Struga is most famous for its annual Poetry Evenings, one of the oldest international poetry festivals in the world. Prilep is Macedonia’s Historic Gem, where ancient ruins, rich culture, and striking landscapes make for an intriguing and picturesque destination.

It has a beautiful Covered Bazaar and the Clock Tower, and you can visit an ancient Greek city nearby. Some of them are more towns than cities because they’re very small.

Bitola, known during the Ottoman Empire as Manastır or Monastir, is one of the oldest cities in North Macedonia. It is located in the southern part of the Pelagonia valley, surrounded by the Baba, Nidže, and Kajmakčalan mountain ranges, 14 kilometres (9 miles) north of the Medžitlija-Níki border crossing with Greece. The old city is located on the terraced riverbank dominated by an ancient fortress, north of which is a Roman aqueduct. Heraclea is a sight located on the outskirts of Bitola, a beautiful city worth exploring.

Probably the most famous pin-up of them all, Bettie Page is highly credited for pin-up’s successful transition from illustration to photography. Following the Division of Pictorial Publicity’s overwhelming success, it came as little surprise that propaganda efforts would only increase as the United States became involved in World War Two. The art form’s ever-growing popularity inevitably bled into other mediums. Meals in restaurants start from €3 and a daily bus pass (taking you as far as Matka Canyon and back) only costs €1.50! From Skopje, catch a bus to Sofia taking 3 hours and costing less than €20. I really enjoyed my 2 days in Sofia and would highly recommend a visit!

Where to stay in Ohrid

Once you’ve arrived, follow the short, well-marked trail up the rocky hill to explore ancient stone markers. The springs nearby are also worth a visit, and you can rent a rowboat for an even closer look. Founded in AD 905 by its namesake saint, the monastery is famous for its stunning Byzantine architecture, vibrant frescoes, and peaceful setting. Some of the most popular routes include the climb to Magaro Peak at 2,255m (7,348 ft) for breathtaking vistas or the scenic paths through forested valleys. Galičica National Park sits between Lake Ohrid and Lake Prespa and is a hiker’s paradise, with trails offering stunning panoramic views of both lakes and beyond.

In any case, it’s a pretty bridge and since it’s how you get to and from many of the main sights in Skopje, enjoy thinking about this little history lesson as you look at it or cross it! There are also multiple mosques, churches, museums and a clocktower to explore. But hey, if we’re embracing the kitsch of Skopje, a visit to the city’s main square is a must. It was a costly project, and one that continues to divide/wow both visitors and residents alike.

The village is famous for the Vevčani Carnival, a centuries-old tradition held annually in January. Better yet, the Bay of Bones is a fascinating Scuba Diving destination (yes, you can dive in North Macedonia!). The lake’s shores, particularly on the Macedonian side, are dotted with historic destinations, with the city of Ohrid being the most prominent. I even took the local bus here from the capital when I was visiting for the first time in 2015. The area around Lake Prespa is marked by picturesque villages, orchards, and old churches, offering a glimpse into the traditional lifestyle of the region.

Bitola & Heraclea Lyncestis

The historical Jewish community, of Sephardic origin, lived in the city until World War II, when some were able to immigrate to the United States and Chile. Bitola became one of the major cities of the Vardarska banovina. Throughout the 19th century, Bitola hosted the largest urban population of Aromanians in their native Balkans, with an estimated 10,000 to 18,000 Aromanians out of a total population of 40,000–50,000.
